Judo translates as “the gentle way”, although it is rightly regarded as a dynamic combat sport discipline, demanding both physical prowess and mental training to defeat an opponent.

Derived from Jujitsu, the art for either attacking others or defending oneself with nothing but one’s own body, Judo was founded in 1882 in by Jigoro Kano, the famous educator and first Asian member of the International Olympic Committee.

Initiated from a standing position, Judo involves tachi waza (standing techniques) that allow you to lift and throw your opponents onto their backs, and on the ground, ne waza techniques that allow you to pin your opponents down, control them, and apply various chokeholds or joint locks until submission.

Expressing the essence of this system is the axiom “maximum efficient use of energy”, a concept Jigoro Kano considered both a cornerstone of martial arts and a principle useful in many aspects of life.

To Kano, the practical application of this principle, could contribute much to human and social development, including “mutual prosperity for self and others”, which he identified as the proper goal of training.

His training was to transcended mere technique to embrace a set of principles for perfecting the self.   To reflect this, he replaced justu (technique) in the word “ju-jutsu” with the suffix do (path) to create a new name for his art: judo.  His training hall he named “Ko-do-kan,” or “a place to teach the path.”
