Taekwondo is a Korean martial art characterised by its fast, high and spinning kicks.
Broken down, in Korean, “tae” means: “to strike or break with foot”; “kwon”: “to strike or break with fist”; and “do”: “way”, “method”, or “path”.
Taekwondo as a sport and as an art, is a useful way to achieve physical fitness, to improve mental discipline and emotional equanimity, to learn self defence skills and to develop a sense of responsibility for oneself and others. It combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport, exercise, and in some cases meditation and philosophy.
As one the world’s most popular martial art in terms of number of practitioners, Taekwondo now stands among the official games in the Olympics.
It should be noted, however, that “sport taekwondo” – typically referring to the martial art as seen in Olympic sparring with its emphasis on speed – differs from “traditional taekwondo, which was established in the 1950s and 1960s in the South Korean military, and in various civilian organisations, including schools and universities.
Although there are doctrinal and technical differences between the two, and among the various organizations, the art in general emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, employing the leg’s greater reach and power (compared to the arm).
However Taekwondo training does include a system of blocks, punches, and open-handed strikes and may also include various take-downs or sweeps, throws, and joint locks. Some taekwondo instructors also incorporate the use of pressure points, known as jiapsul, as well as grabbing self-defense techniques borrowed from other martial arts, such as hapkido and judo.
Traditional Taekwondo makes extensive use of forms (Poomse) training and competition that develop balance, co-ordination, and speed. Wooden board breaking develops power, target accuracy and confidence.
It is generally accepted that Taekwondo starts entering into Sport Taekwondo when instructors begin emphasizing the need for sparring.
In this regard the best fighters are technically very adept. Not only do they understand about breathing, footwork, balance, hip movement, technique, & reaction force, their training should be seen to develop fitness, coordination, confidence, flexibility and speed.
